Who We Are
Climate Justice Durham (CJD) is a multi-generational, non-partisan group of volunteers advocating for effective and equitable climate action in Durham Region and beyond.
Our goals are to provide evidence-based educational resources, drive community engagement, take direct political and policy action. Our mission is to create a just, healthier, and more sustainable future for all.
CJD started in 2019 as Fridays for Future Whitby, but quickly became active in neighbouring municipalities. In 2021, we became Climate Justice Durham.
Values
- We are committed to the fight against climate change.
- We recognize that climate change is an intersectional issue and that racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, class oppression, and all other forms of oppression determine who is most impacted by climate change. The fight against climate change is fundamentally a fight against injustice and suffering and would be incomplete if these forms of oppression were not also explicitly addressed.
- We stand against the various systems, such as imperialism, capitalism, and settler colonialism that contribute to the climate crisis, and work to mitigate the harms they continue to cause.
- We value rest, strive to avoid activist burnout, and create a culture of care and support. We believe that self-care is political.
- We recognize that climate change cannot be addressed solely through traditional and established methods under capitalism, but that these methods are not without merit.
- We are committed to using a variety of methods to address climate change, including but not limited to traditional campaigning, political protest, and non-violent direct action.
Our Partnerships
To address the climate crisis, we are advocating for better government policy at all levels, improving community awareness and understanding of climate change, and working with partners to build community capacity, increase resilience, and implement mitigation measures.
